Commitment Issues? Yep, We’ve All Been There.

Commitment Issues? Yep, We've All Been There.

You sign your kid up for a 10-week program. You’re doing the right thing. Fresh air, new friends, new skills, some good old-fashioned running around. Perfect.

Week one? Excitement.
Week two? Still onboard.
Week three? Suddenly you’ve got a small, stubborn statue standing by the door saying, “Do I haaaaave to go?”
Cue the eye-rolls, the drama, the last-minute stomach aches.

Ride the waves

We get it. Truly. Sport can be a rollercoaster—for kids and for parents. And it’s often less about the activity itself and more about confidence, energy, school pressures, moods, or just plain tiredness (same, honestly).

At Match Point Tennis Academy, we never forget that kids are just that—kids. Not little robots. Not mini adults. They have ups and downs, and part of playing sport is learning how to ride those waves. Sometimes that means a pep talk. Sometimes it means backing off. And sometimes it means phoning a coach to say, “Can you help get them back on track?”

We’re here for all of it.

We also know you know your child best. So we treat your insight as gold. If something’s off, tell us. If something’s clicked, definitely tell us. Because when coaches and parents team up, we can help kids build resilience, responsibility, and yes—commitment.

Got a reluctant player on your hands? Try these little motivation boosters:

  • Celebrate small wins
Don’t wait for a trophy. Praise effort: “You tried really hard today—even when it got tricky.”

  • Let them lead
Ask, “What was your favourite part of today?” Let them take ownership of their experience.

  • Make it social
Organise a post-session playdate or hot choc with a teammate. Friendship is a powerful motivator.

  • Stick to the routine
Don’t let every wobble become a full exit. Kids thrive on routine—even if they grumble about it.

  • Model commitment
Let them see you stick to things—even when you don’t feel like it. Grown-up tennis lesson, anyone?

Stick with it

Above all, remember: not every week will be a winner. That’s OK. What matters most is the message we send—you matter, and it’s worth sticking with things.

We’re here to support you, your kids, and all the real-life bumps in between. It’s not about perfect attendance. It’s about progress, patience, and plenty of laughs along the way.

Let’s keep the conversation going—we’re in this with you.
